I'd like to plug in a hard drive in another part of the house, figuring that if there's a fire or theft near my Mac, I'd have a backup hard drive elsewhere. Is there an easy way to use Airport so I don't have to snake wires through the house. Otherwise, I'll just go with a good firewire drive with a USB option and TRY to remember to unplug it and put it somewhere else between weekly backups. (Yeah, like I see myself really doing THAT.)

Re: External hard drives with Airport? Can I?
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 7:33 AMThe new square-shaped Airport Extreme base station allows you to plug an external USB drive in. Older models only support plugging in a printer to the USB port.
If you have a spare drive lying around, Vantec (www.vantec-usa.com) makes an ethernet/usb drive enclosure that you can plug into the ethernet jack in the back of any airport. The only catch is that you have to format it as a FAT32 drive if you're going to use the ethernet connection. I used to have this setup, but when I upgraded to Leopard, my Powerbook could no longer connect to it. Seems to be a problem only with older macs, though. My hubby's macbook pro found it just fine. -
