Porn on the Mac: What Should a Class Include?

I am a Macintosh consultant in Portland OR and have a lot of GLBT clients who sometimes ask advice about various things which are technical but which I tend not to encounter elsewhere. For whatever reason, my het clientele is just not very adventurous and does not often ask me questions about capturing video, cataloging porn and using chat cams the way that gay guys do. Porn sites in general tend to push the envelope on technology, and gay dating sites push the envelope for porn, which gets to my question.

A few years ago I suggested to a local Mac Users Group that a good way to bring in new and younger users would be to offer a special class called "Porn on the Mac" that would be a basic Mac class but would cover topics such as chatrooms, organizing photos, creating online profiles and scanning with interesting examples from the world of porn. Needless to say this idea did not go over well.

Talking with a gay client about that today, he thought it was a great idea and that I should do it with a focus on GLBT folks. So, if I were to do such a class, what are the sorts of things that folks think should be covered? The sort of questions I tend to get a lot are about how to organize photos and bookmarks, archiving video and configuring chat cams for various individual sites and software. What are the most crucial porn skills you have or would like to have to get more out of your Mac?

I think this could be a great way to build community and learn more about your Mac.

I still have plenty of things to do with it, so I was wondering if anyone had some advice, suggestions on an external hard drive ? Also, are there certain things I should/should not keep on it due to accessability ? my understanding is that it takes longer to access things on the external hard-drive ? Is that true ?

Hope this post isn't too off topic. I'm student filmmaker who is directing/producing a community-based, social justice-themed documentary film exploring ways that Gay Latino Immigrants cope with oppression and are creating a more resilient community.

I have built a website using Apples' iWeb that is hosted off my dot mac account, accessed via my own domain name, www.twentyfive7.org. The pages for my film project are accessible through the "SOMOS" link on homepage at the twentyfive7.org URL.

I'd love to find a tech-savvy mac person here in the Bay Area who might be willing to help and advise me in tranferring the film-related SOMOS pages to a new domain name that his hosted independently from my dot mac account.

If any one out there can lend a hand, please let me know. I'd really appreciate and it would help our project a lot!

hey mac gods-

so, my iBook G4 is not working properly right now. as of right now, when I press the power button, it turns on and makes a loud wheezing from the fan, then the screen lights up with the Mac Apple and the thinking circle and then the thinking circle stays that way...forever. I actually haven't left it on to see if it actually clicks over yet but have heard I should try.

Events leading up to this: I bought a new digital camera and tried importing my photo's to iPhoto. One of my USB ports wouldn't recognize the camera at all. But the other USB port did right away. There were a few times that I unplugged the USB cable without "properly ejecting the device" before unplugging. *oops* I received error messages telling me so a couple times. Also, I deleted over 200 photos from my iPhoto as well.

I left my machine on all day on Saturday, came back home...and stuck a recently burned CD into it so that I could copy it into my iTunes. Now, normally, when you stick a CD into your machine, iTunes will open automatically and try to identify it, right? well, this time, iTunes wasn't opening at all. I'd click on the icon, the black arrow would pop up and the icon would jump up and down, and then the black arrow would disappear. I tried opening iTunes unsuccessfully more than a few times. I decided I'd power down and restart to see if that'd fix the problem.

Anyway, the wierdest part of this whole trauma is that before I powered down that first time, the Finder Menu on the top of the screen would appear and disappear numerous times, it was almost as if my machine was having a psychotic episode. I'd never seen any Mac do this before and this is what prompted me to just manually power it off. I thought about just letting it do its thing but I kinda got freaked out and just decided to power it off. And ever since then, it won't boot up properly.

A friend pointed me to a power up trick of holding down the open apple key, the option key, the letter P and the letter R, but nothing happened with that. Another friend told me this has happened to him before and its a simple preference setting that needs to be fixed.

I'm just really hoping its not a costly or too huge of a problem. Has anyone experienced this or have any recommendations of what I should do?

Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this!!

Basically making text unreadable. Through the Apple support forums I found out I wasn't alone. There's a conflict that happens if you have Helvetica Fractions or Times Phonetic typefaces open on your Mac. I closed those for my everyday use and will just reopen them if I have a design project that requires them. (By the way, I use Suitcase Fusion to manage fonts.)

I need to replace my 14-inch iBook G4 (long story). I've never owned a desktop and I like the idea of being able to use the computer in different places. But I hardly ever take the iBook out of the house anymore, I don't have many on-the-road computer needs, and our apartment is very small so I only ever move it to a different chair or something. I do digital photography and am starting to get into video. Not professionally, yet.

I'm looking at the MacBooks and MacBook Pros, but the iMacs would give me more storage and display and better graphics, particularly for the money.

Are there any hardcore notebook people out there who've switched to desktops? Any regrets? Do you feel tied down, or are you happier with the added power?

When editing or adding someone to Address Book, next to each category, there's a small up/down arrow where you can change (for example) the phone to "work" or "mobile" or "home" and then type in the number in the next field. Everytime I've clicked on those arrows, that nasty revolving beachball starts and runs until I have to force quit. I've got the latest software on a Hot G-5 mac. Anyone else having a problem like that?
In the Tiger installs, Safari has a "Private Browsing" feature that I have come to like (despite the fact that no one else uses my laptop) that basically blocks saving of (most) cookies and Google searches, and the browsing history. The problem is that I have to remember to turn on the feature each time I start Safari.

I've seen nothing definitive (or permanent) on the Apple discussion boards of late, so I'm asking around: any clue on turning Private Browsing into a default?

Several weeks ago I got a letter by snail mail about the prize. Recently an e-mail said they were about to send it and asked what color I wanted. (Black) I'd rather sell it and apply the $ to a bigger iPod with video. I intend to leave it wrapped and save any accompanying paperwork that comes with it to assure it's legality as much as possible. The e-mail was from someone at what seems to be from a legit marketing company I checked out on the web.

Any interest or any suggestions? I spoke to someone at a local CompUSA that said they'd probably take an unopened one if I was going to apply it's value to a more expensive model. If that doesn't fly, then I go another route.

But, passing an architecture office the other day (I'm an architect), I saw that the whole office was using Macs... which got to me wondering what CAD programs are generally used on the Mac platform? Its pretty much a given, I think, if you're an arch office using PCs that you're either autoCAD or Microstation, and to be honest, I think in 10 years I've ONCE received files that had originated on a Mac from another office. Even further back, I did spend one summer in MiniCAD on the old (then rip-roarin' new) Quadras, but I've not heard from it since.
Go to this link:
http://www.beatnikpad.com/archives/2003/03/08/adblocking

BUT...you need to also make the following changes:
1) For Camino users, the path is actually
/Users/[yourname]/Library/Application Support/Camino/chrome

and 2) I added the following block of text to the userContent.css file:
/* Tribe ads */
DIV[CLASS="OAS"] { display: none ! important }

So...download the file, make the change above, follow the directions for your browser of choice (including quitting/relaunching if necessary)—works with Safari, Camino (with the above noted modification in file path), Firefox, Mozilla, OmniWeb, and likely Netscape.

Voila! An ad-free tribe existence.

So my question is: what good TV solutions have the rest of you found? My ultimate goal is to connect my TV via the S-video out and control my empire via remote control from the couch. I'd be grateful to hear what has (and has not) worked for the rest of you out there.

I'm so fed up with my straight Windows friends taunting me with SageTV and having no gay Macintosh riposte.

Let me know....

Hi Folks,

I'm turning to you all because I need a user friendly group to help me take a little leap forward in technology. Hope the long post doesn't freak ya out, I really just have two simple questions, I just take a long time to get there.....
I've been a mac baby ever since Apple used us RA's at the University of Michigan residence halls back in the late '80s to introduce personal computers to the college masses. HOWEVER, it's always been a simple tool to me and I've never gone into the details. I am NOT a computer geek, although I hold them in the HIGHEST esteem!

One of the things I love about the mac's is how little about computers I've ever had to know! I just use it to do what I need and if there is a problem, I can generally figure it out by myself and not have to scream. After college I abandoned using a computer for about 8 years until I broke down and got a first generation bondi blue iMac in the late 90's, mostly just to surf the net, e-mail, and then get my eBay business started. It was amazing how easily I was able to pick up where I had left off years ago and just get goin'!

When my bondi blue died in '92 I got my current refurbed iMac G3/600 CDWR Graphite w/ 128MB built in memory (NOTE: that is ALL I really know about the specs of my computer!) and kept on going. I've been perfectly happy & content using OS 9.2, explorer 5.1, my old outlook 5, and I can do just what I need to doctor the images of my artwork with photoshop 5.5. I haven't needed or wanted more.....but I think the web has passed me at some kind of warp speed and this old machine is in need of some help. Lots of stuff on the net won't work on my machine, lot's of little things seem to be going wrong, my scanner suddenly won't work because IT want's me to upgrade to OS 10. A friend gave me a copy of OS 10 Panther, but of course it's useless to me at the moment.

So what's a poor queer hippie stonecutter artist to do? ALL I REALLY want to do is add enough of that memory and RAM or whatever is needed to supercharge this thing and help this baby think through all the increasing complications of the web. If I get that message about not enough memory for shockwave one more time, I'm going to scream.

Getting a new mac is NOT an option at the moment. I think that basically I can just increase my built in memory and RAM fairly inexpensively and keep going effectively for awhile. So the questions are (I think)....

BUILT in memory....I know, 128MB is pitiful. How much can I increase it to, what SPECIFICALLY do I buy? I know it's some kind of memory stick and that I can at least quadruple it, right? If I know what to get I have a friend here who can help me install it.

RAM....I don't really know what this, but I have heard that I can buy a lot more of it and install it pretty easily, and it should make a big difference, right? Again, what SPECIFICALLY do I need to buy? Again, once I have the necessary components I have a mac supergeek here in bumfuck Central Oregon Coast who will help me put it all together, or do it for me for trade.

I'm pretty sure that I'll get my supplies from Powermax here in Oregon. I've done biz with them before and they seem to have everything at great prices. I apologize for this being such a long post, but hey, I figured there is someone out there who would like to help me and you never know if there is a potential husband out there in Gay Macintosh user land ; )

Kindest regards with great appreciation,

apparently it's also possible to set your new Mac into this kind of resolution,
see this thread:
http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?postid=5245#post5245
I've tried the trick but can't get it to work,
apparently it only works in Tiger (and I'm still on OS X.3.9)

quote from the thread:
"Try this. Hold down option while clicking the Displays icon in System prefs. Not all graphics cards support it, but a P'Book G4 should (my 1.33ghz 17' does).
When it's rotated, you need to close system prefs and re-open it (and do the "option" thing again) to put it back.
It can be interesting, using the 'book as a book!"

so I wonder how many people here succeed,
try it and post here if it's working for you
It's a brief access, and since it didn't do this before the
So, my question is, how can I disable Spotlight,
or at least reduce the frequency or it doing its
stops Spotlight from hitting the drive.

Okay, this comes from having used unsecure, virus-prone Windows PC's for too long before making the switch to Mac, but I don't like using a PC or Mac without some sort of antivirus program on it. I know that there are virtually no Mac viruses in the wild, and yet I still would feel better having antivirus protection.

I was quite pleased with the Virex program that came with my .Mac subscription. I used both the 7.2 and 7.5 versions and had no problems with either. Unfortunately, there's not a Virex version for OS X 10.4 Tiger yet, and I've heard that there might never be.

So I'm asking for recommendations. What antivirus program do you use (if any)? Does it work with Tiger? Has anyone tried the brand new version of Norton AntiVirus for Mac (version 10)? I heard bad things about version 9, but it sounds like they may have been resolved in this new version.

Any help is appreciated.

had a question about the new Keychain on Tiger. I love th new interface. My problem is this:

I noticed that you can select by the types of passwords (i.e. Application, internet, ...). For some reason though it has a large number of what would be "Internet" passwords stored as "Application" passwords. I want to change them from applicatin passwords to internet passwords so I can sort by the different types. However, I can't figure out how to change the type. I tried just typing in the field where the type was located but it didn't do anything.

Has anyone else had this problem ? Do you know what i'm talking about ? Is there something I'm missing ?

Any help would be appreciated

I figure if Mail can make pics smaller for mailing...maybe that can also apply to uploading to Homepage.
